In the national standard GB9851.1-1990 "Technical Terms of Printing", the definition of printing is: "Printing is a process technology that uses printing plates or other means to transfer the graphic information on the original manuscript to the substrate." For this reason, the latest national standard GB/T9851.1-2008 defines printing as "the copying process of transferring the coloring agent/pigment to the substrate by using analog or digital image carrier."

Types of printing

(1) letterpress printing, the graphic part of the printing plate is raised, which is obviously higher than the blank part. The printing principle is similar to seal. Early woodblock printing, movable type printing and later type printing all belong to letterpress printing.

(2) Gravure printing, in which the graphic part of the printing plate is lower than the blank part, is often used for printing securities such as banknotes and stamps.

(3) Lithography, in which the graphic and blank parts of the printing plate are almost on the same plane, and the principle of oil-water incompatibility is used for printing.

(4) Hole printing, in which the graphic and text parts of the printing plate are holes, and the ink is transferred to the surface of the substrate through the holes. Common hole printing includes hollow-out plates and screen plates.
